Abstract

This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aimed to analyze how academia has responded to transformations in the Information Technology (IT) sector, in an effort to align university education with the demands of the IT industry. The research sought to answer four questions: (i) "What curricular adaptations has academia implemented to keep pace with technological changes in the IT sector?" (ii) "What are the main technical and interpersonal skills gaps in the training of IT professionals, as perceived by the industry?" (iii) "What innovative educational programs have been implemented to mitigate academic training gaps and meet the needs of the IT industry?" and (iv) "What emerging trends in IT are influencing the competencies required of recent graduates?" A total of 137 studies published in 44 countries were analyzed, extracted from the ACM, IEEE, Springer, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The analysis of the data into categories highlighted the academic efforts to update curricula and develop technical and interpersonal skills, responding to innovations in the production sector. The studies also highlighted persistent gaps in professional training for the IT sector over the decades, as well as key emerging IT trends. The results of the analytical process reinforce the importance of more agile, flexible training strategies that are connected to innovation ecosystems for the technology sector.
