Abstract

This paper presents a systematic review (2010–2024) on academic spin-offs as drivers of technology transfer (TT), emphasizing how prior-art search and patent landscaping/FTO connect to market decisions (beachhead, go-to-market, value-based pricing). Using Scopus, we identified 245 records; after a two-stage PRISMA screening, 201 studies were qualitatively synthesized. Findings indicate: (i) universities and TTOs/NITs play a pivotal role; (ii) early IP routines (prior art, landscaping, FTO) work as de-risking mechanisms; (iii) market orientation (customer discovery, JTBD) and hybrid financing (grants + equity/venture builder) underpin initial adoption (paid PoC/contracts); and (iv) evidence is geographically concentrated in mature ecosystems (EU/US), with gaps in emerging economies—particularly in integrating IP → adoption → economic outcomes. We propose a conceptual linkage between IP intelligence and market execution and offer operational guidelines for TTOs/NITs (dual IP+market gates, mandatory IP triage before heavy R&D, PoCs with explicit success criteria). We conclude that early IP-market integration improves regulatory/commercial predictability, reduces rework, and accelerates the transition from TRL to adoption milestones, providing actionable pathways to make TT more repeatable and reliable in Brazil.
