Abstract

This study aims to identify the possibilities for incorporating oyster shells into the circular economy by
analyzing the oyster production chain in the coastal region of Greater Florianópolis, with particular
emphasis on Ribeirão da Ilha. The research is grounded in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
An exploratory methodology with a qualitative approach was adopted. Three distinct printed
questionnaires were developed and administered in person to oyster farmers, restaurant owners, and
compounding pharmacies between June and July 2025. The findings reveal a lack of information
regarding the entire process of oyster shell disposal as well as shell processing methods. Although
Santa Catarina is the largest oyster producer in Brazil, accounting for a substantial share of national
production, there is still no consolidated structure for the large-scale oyster shell reuse. The study
concludes that, although current processing is limited, there are clear indications of potential,
particularly with a focus on circular economy and sustainability. Oyster shells are more than mere waste; they are a source of value-added materials, and there are signs that projects in this area could
expand and scale up.
