Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the school dropout rate in elementary school in the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil). To that end, data was collected on the website of the Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research for the period 2015 to 2022. The data analysis was carried out using an approach derived from the Chow Test, controlling the effects of Location (rural or urban school) and Administrative Dependency (public or private school. For this purpose, the year 2020 (occurrence of the lockdown) was taken as the focal point. The results confirmed the break in the trend in the evolution of the school dropout rate between 2015 and 2022 due to the pandemic, and revealed that the average dropout rate in public schools increased in relation to private schools; as well as the rate in urban schools in relation to the rate in rural schools. The findings of the study add to the efforts to provide qualified information to public managers for the improvement or reformulation of educational public policies to face the pandemic.
