Abstract

The consumption of fresh fruits and unprocessed products has been significantly increasing in Brazil due to consumers’ growing demand for healthy foods aimed at promoting health and well-being. Fruit farming in Santana do Livramento, RS, has become an alternative form of agricultural production and a source of income for the municipality’s family farmers. Strawberry production has proven to be a promising source of income for these farmers. However, the profile of these producers had not yet been studied in terms of their social, economic, and technological characteristics. The objective of this research was to conduct a diagnostic analysis of strawberry production by family farmers in Santana do Livramento, RS, as well as to outline their social profile. To obtain the results, a semi-structured questionnaire was applied remotely to the farmers. The results show that most farms have less than 15 hectares, with the area used for strawberry cultivation being up to 600 m² in most cases, and none of the farms consider strawberry growing as their main agricultural activity. The strawberries are mainly marketed directly to consumers. The incidence of fungal diseases was reported as the main management issue by the producers, who are divided in their use of chemical and organic control methods. Strawberry producers face high demand for their product and are able to sell their production with ease.
