Abstract

This study aims to understand practices related to Industry 4.0 in the manufacturing industries in the Amazon region. The research employed a multiple-case study as an epistemological approach, utilizing a protocol designed to understand Industry 4.0 practices and support organizations in their pursuit of new productive and technological trajectories. The protocol made it possible to understand the current state of the companies concerning the subject, supporting the development of research in the Amazonian context. Results indicate that the production system adopted by an organization can directly influence the level of I4.0 maturity in the company. This research offers relevant contributions for academics and professionals involved in eco-innovation and sustainable business practices. The findings may have broad sociological and organizational behavior implications for individuals, concerning both the advantages (e.g., training, higher wages) and disadvantages (e.g., layoffs, unemployment) of Industry 4.0 adoption, as well as the evolving human-machine relationship in the context of job displacement or precarity. As for the social implication, the application protocol, especially the open structured interviews, provided an interpretation of the I4.0 phenomenon based on people's perceptions. This article contributes to the literature by providing an understanding of Industry 4.0 from an operations management perspective within the Amazon region.
