Abstract

This paper aims to identify the main factors that lead companies to distribute dividends above the mandatory amount. The sample comprises 2,097 observations of 450 companies listed on B3 - Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão, with active registration from 2005 to 2023, using annual data. The estimation was conducted using logistic regression (Logit). Variables such as previous dividends, profitability, investment, liquidity, financial leverage, company size, life cycle, and growth opportunities were analyzed to understand their relationship with the practice of paying dividends above the mandatory amount. The variables of past dividends, profitability, leverage, free cash flow, growth opportunities, and life cycle have been shown to be significant. On the other hand, the variables liquidity, company size, and investments did not impact the probability of paying dividends above the mandatory amount. This paper contributes to filling the gap in the Brazilian literature that overlooks the institutional characteristic of the mandatory minimum payment of dividends.
