ABSTRACT

The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables has been growing significantly in Brazil due to increasing consumer demand for healthy foods that promote health and well-being. Horticulture in Santana do Livramento, RS, has become an alternative to agricultural production and a source of income for family farmers in the municipality. In this context, strawberry production stands out as a promising activity. The profile of these producers had not yet been studied in terms of their social, economic, and technological characteristics. The objective of this study was to analyze the socioeconomic and production profile of strawberry cultivation among family farmers in Santana do Livramento, RS. Data were collected through a remotely administered semi-structured questionnaire. The results show that most farms were smaller than 15 hectares, with the majority allocating up to 600m² to strawberry cultivation. Strawberries were not the main agricultural activity on any of the farms. Marketing is carried out primarily through direct sales to consumers. The incidence of fungal diseases was identified as the main challenge faced by producers, regardless of whether the phytosanitary management system adopted involved chemical or organic control. A high demand for strawberries was observed, ensuring the commercialization of production.
