ABSTRACT

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly embedded in the educational context. Against this backdrop, this study aims to comparatively analyze the perceptions of faculty members from public and private institutions regarding the acceptance of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) in undergraduate Business Administration programs in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The investigation was conducted based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by Davis (1989), focusing on the following dimensions: Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Attitude Toward Technology (ATT), and Behavioral Intention (BI), in addition to five external variables frequently mentioned in the literature, as suggested by Abdullah and Ward (2016). This is an exploratory-descriptive study conducted through a survey. The questionnaire, predominantly composed of closed-ended questions, included two open-ended questions, and the sample consisted of 118 faculty members from 26 higher education institutions in Rio Grande do Sul. Data were analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The results indicate that, regarding self-efficacy, perceived satisfaction, anxiety, experience, perceived ease of use, and attitude toward the use of VLEs, faculty members from private institutions presented slightly higher results than those from public institutions. Subjective Norms was the only variable to show a statistically significant difference between the groups, with a higher mean among faculty members from private institutions. This finding may suggest that aspects of the institutional and social context influence faculty members’ acceptance and use of technologies.
